I woke up at 5:00 AM and prepared to leave. Today, I traveled with my cat from Lake Yunoko through Numata City, Naganohara Town, and Tsumagoi Village to Ueda City. First, I crossed the Konsei Pass. I took a break at Michi-no-Eki Agatsuma-Kyo, where I bought a pack of tomatoes, some cucumbers, and a tube of sansho miso. I also bought and ate an an-donut as a light snack. I arrived in Ueda at 11:30 AM. I picked up my wife at my son's home, and we headed to the parking lot of Sanada Oyashiki Park. Since the parking spots were in the shade, the temperature inside my FJ didn't rise, which was perfect for keeping my cat safe. From there, we walked to a nearby soba restaurant "Sanada" in Sanada for lunch at 12:30 PM. After lunch, we walked about 1 km to a nearby blueberry farm and enjoyed picking blueberries. The entrance fee was 700 yen per person, and we could take our harvest home for 180 yen per 100g. Between the two of us, we picked about 2 kg in total. My wife says it's much cheaper than buying it at the market. Ueda City stays very hot until 5:00 PM. Fortunately, the Bouyama parking lot near my son's home gets shaded after 5:00 PM, so it was safe to leave my cat in the parked FJ Cruiser there. For our evening meal, my wife made a delicious dinner. She also repaired my torn jeans. Actually, I had only brought shorts with me on this trip, so it had been quite cold up in the mountains. Now that they are fixed, I'm all set! |

It was raining in the morning, so I couldn't cook outdoors. I just had some alpha rice (freeze-dried emergency rice) and yogurt for breakfast. Since the moon is still almost perfectly round the day after a full moon, I was eagerly waiting for the exact moment it would rise over the mountain ridge. I spent my time at the visitor center or inside my FJ until that hour, hoping for a beautiful shot. Unfortunately, the sky didn't clear up, so I finally gave up and went to sleep. |

I got up at 4:00 AM. I cooked rice using my Coleman Peak 1 stove. I made an umeboshi onigiri wrapped in nori, and a small plain onigiri. With the rest of the rice, I made Lu Rou Fan using a ready-to-eat pack from MUJI. I also had a café au lait and kiwi yogurt. It rained a little while I was cooking. It was sunny at 9:00 AM, so I walked around Lake Yunoko to Kotaki. The round trip was about 4 km, but the elevation difference made it quite strenuous. Around 1:00 PM, I went to Onsenji Temple at Yumoto Onsen, right near Lake Yunoko, for a hot spring bath. After 2:00 PM, I had lunch by the lake: canned sukiyaki, my rice balls, and a few other things. After that, I took a nap in my FJ. The moonrise was scheduled for 7:30 PM, but it was expected to appear from behind the ridge of Mount Nantai around 8:00 PM. I moved to the observation deck and photo spot along the Lake Yunoko walking trail. However, the clouds were thick, and I couldn't see the full moon at first. Since it wasn't raining, I decided to stay there, hoping I might see it through gaps in the clouds. Eventually, I managed to take a few photos capturing the full moon through the clouds, then packed up and left. It was past 10:00 PM. |

I had some inarizushi, grilled bell peppers and broccoli, and a café au lait for breakfast. My cat and I headed to Nikko. My goal was to photograph the full moon reflecting on Lake Yunoko. We took a break at Michi-no-Eki Shimotsuke. First, I visited the Utsunomiya Museum of Art to see the Kandinsky exhibition. Ideally, I would have liked to use the restaurant inside the museum, but I felt it would be a bit too much to dine there alone. Instead, I bought a katsudon bento box at a supermarket near the museum and ate it in the parking lot with my cat. I arrived at the Lake Yunoko parking lot around 4:00 PM. Around 7:00 PM, at moonrise, the moon was unfortunately obscured by clouds. However, around 8:00 PM, it finally became visible through thin clouds, and I managed to take several pictures. I titled the best shot "Under a Veiled Moon." It was photographed with an OLYMPUS OM-SYSTEM S ZUIKO AUTO-ZOOM 35-70mm 1:3.5-4.5 (No. 143233). |

I made a ham and egg, sauce yakisoba, granola yogurt, and a café au lait for my breakfast. It was cloudy but extremely humid. I prepared for my photography trip to Nikko, especially checking my cooking gas and food supplies. When I opened a pack of nori (seaweed), Miya-O came running out of nowhere. She absolutely loves nori. I made Chicken Ramen with a raw egg for lunch. Chicken Ramen was released in 1958 and is the origin of instant ramen. So, I have been eating it since I was four years old. Every now and then, I just get a strong craving for it. The latest instant ramens are trying to get as close to real restaurant ramen as possible. For me, that's not what makes it appealing. Chicken Ramen is appealing because it is Chicken Ramen, not just "ramen." I made fried rice for my evening meal, though I just microwaved some frozen food I bought from the co-op. I also made two grilled bell peppers, some broccoli, and granola yogurt. |

I made a salad with tomatoes, basil leaves, shiso leaves, and Japanese parsley for my breakfast. These were all harvested from my potted plants. I also made sauce yakisoba. I prepared for my next photography trip to Oku-Nikko, focusing especially on food prep. I bought some food at the MUJI Iwai store. This was my first time using the store since it opened. Contrary to my expectations, the MUJI Iwai store had the exact same selection of goods as any other MUJI store. Perhaps my preconceived notion that it's just a "countryside" store arises precisely because it's right in my neighborhood. I made a soup with potatoes, negi(green onions), and shimeji mushrooms for lunch. The broth was a delicious byproduct of making the braised pork spare ribs. I made pan-fried tandoori chicken for dinner. I followed a tandoori chicken recipe, except it was cooked in a frying pan instead of a traditional tandoor oven. |

I made a salad with tomatoes, cucumbers, mozzarella cheese, and basil leaves for breakfast. I also made ham and eggs, and a café au lait. To top it off, I had a donut. I had a very similar meal for lunch. Donuts are just so appealing. . |

I woke up early. I cooked the pork spare ribs I bought at Torisen yesterday in a pressure cooker. Then, I removed the meat from the bones and simmered it with onions, carrots, and other vegetables in a sweet and savory sauce, similar to the one used for gyudon (beef bowls). For breakfast, I enjoyed this delicious braised pork spare ribs over rice, topped with a soft-boiled egg. |

I cooked rice for breakfast and made a Chinese-style rice bowl. The ingredient was from a frozen pack I bought from the co-op. I also made a cucumber salad, grilled atsuage(thick fried tofu), and granola yogurt. It was a beautiful sunny day. I walked 6 kilometers in Yasaka Park starting at 5:30 AM. It was already hot out in the sun. Miya-O generally dislikes air-conditioned rooms, but it seems she was hot too. She came back to the air-conditioned room occasionally. When she was away for a long time, I started to worry about her, wondering if she was suffering from heatstroke somewhere in the house. Today, I went to Torisen to buy groceries. For dinner, I had ready-made sushi rolls. |

I grilled salmon, an eggplant, and a green pepper for breakfast. I also made sliced tomatoes with basil leaves, granola yogurt, cheese toast, and a café au lait. I walked 4 kilometers through Yasaka Park. I had an appointment at 10:00 AM with my doctor. It was a routine check-up, and there were no major changes in my health. As usual, my doctor gave me prescriptions for my high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I had stewed pork spare ribs over rice for lunch. I made bibimbap for dinner using frozen ingredients I bought from the co-op. All I did was defrost it and top it with a fried egg. I also had tofu and a café au lait. |

I woke up around 6:00 AM and finished making my breakfast by 7:15 AM. It consisted of boiled molokhia, a tomato and cucumber salad, a fried egg, granola yogurt, and a café au lait. After breakfast, I walked about 6 kilometers in Yasaka Park. I've started walking in the mornings because if I don't, it gets too hot and I hesitate to go out. The lotus flowers in the park pond were in full bloom. Ohishiba (Eleusine indica) has taken over. Most herbicides don't work on it, so until now I've been pulling it out by hand. However, it's grown too big for that now. So, I'm going to cut it down with a karibarai-ki (bush cutter). It seems like the ohishiba is growing much faster than last season. I'll have to try using Zaxa or Basta, which are known to be effective against it. I made two servings of sauce yakisoba. I had one serving for lunch along with tofu and a molokhia vinegared dish. I saved the other serving for dinner, which I had with a spicy cucumber stir-fry with sesame oil, and a tomato and basil leaf salad. |

I made a stew with carrots, potatoes, and sausages, and had it with shiso and basil leaves for breakfast. I also made grilled bell peppers and green beans, sliced tomatoes, granola yogurt, and a café au lait. I jogged 4 km in Yasaka Park, and then walked 2 km. The eggplants, bell peppers, and cucumbers I planted in my home garden are growing well, though they are unfortunately infested with lots of pill bugs. I sprayed herbicide in areas other than my vegetable garden. I made unadon (rice topped with grilled eel kabayaki) for lunch. I used frozen unagi kabayaki that I thawed out. In the afternoon, I edited photos and uploaded them to Flickr. I also cleaned my FJ, which was full of cat hair. I had chilled stew, tomato salad, and a Budweiser for dinner. |

I woke up early. Sunrise was around 4:37 AM. I captured the scene of the rising sun reflecting off the front window of the new fire station. This morning, I harvested an eggplant from my garden. Also, my neighbor gave me a lot of molokhia. I used it to make two dishes: boiled molokhia seasoned with vinegar, and a stir-fry with the eggplant and bonito flakes. I had pork offal stewed in tomato sauce for lunch. For dinner, I had a stew of potatoes, carrots, shimeji mushrooms, and sausages. |

Last night, I slept in the parking lot at the trailhead of Kirikomi-Karikomi Lake. I was able to level my FJ Cruiser there, and there were no "Car Camping Strictly Prohibited" signs. I cooked tamago-ojiya outdoors. The rain came in waves, so I had to use my umbrella each time. Anglers on lakes are one of my favorite motifs. I took some photos of them at Lake Yunoko. "If you want to be happy for an hour, drink alcohol. If you want to be happy for three days, get married. If you want to be happy for a lifetime, learn to fish." This Chinese proverb came to mind as I was photographing the anglers with an old telephoto lens, the Tokina SD 400mm 1:5.6 (No. 4003284). I went to Onsenji again and took an onsen bath for 500 yen at 1:00 PM. I had planned to edit photos in the visitor center's telework corner, but the space was unavailable due to an event. The event was a 60-minute lecture on bears for 500 yen. It covered understanding the ecology of the Tsukinowaguma (Asian black bear) and how to stay safe in case of an encounter. I participated without hesitation. I learned that the ultimate key to bear prevention is making sure they never get a taste for human food. After that, I headed back to Iwai and got home around 8:00 PM. |

I woke up in the parking lot above Ryuzu Falls. This parking lot is sloped, so I couldn't make my FJ level. That was why it wasn't very comfortable to sleep in. I cooked rice using a camping gas stove and an earthenware pot. I made rice balls with pickled plums and saved them for later. I also heated up a package of curry and made curry rice for breakfast at 7:00 AM. At 8:00 AM, I started my trek from Ryuzu Falls, with bear spray attached to my waist belt. I arrived in Kumakubo at 9:00 AM. I saw a lovely couple, so I took a picture of them with the beautiful scenery in the background. I also saw a fox, which was my first time ever seeing one. Unfortunately, it disappeared from sight before I could decide on a composition. While taking a break there, I ate the katsudon bento I bought yesterday. I went through Senjugahama to Sainoko Lake. I noticed more deer footprints than ever before. They must have been hidden by the grass and fallen leaves until now. It really made me realize just how many deer live around here. I caught a bus from the Sainoko Iriguchi bus stop. After returning to my FJ, I visited Onsenji, a hot spring temple where tourists can take a bath for 500 yen, and went inside to soak. A foreign man was in the hot spring at the same time, so I asked him in Japanese, "Kankou desuka?" He gave me a puzzled look and didn't reply. So, I asked in English, "Sightseeing or business?" He said, "Sightseeing. It is good around here. Nice." I replied, "Yeah, I agree. I love it here. However, it's raining." He said, "Not so bad. It's cool. Good place." And he added, "I will return to Tokyo tomorrow. It will be hot." I said, "Yeah, it's really hot in Tokyo, and steamy. Are you staying in Tokyo?" He said, "No, I'm just a tourist. I'm going to visit Kyoto and Osaka next." The water was a bit too hot for me, so as I was getting out, I said, "Have a good day and have a nice trip." He replied ”Thank you, You too". I really enjoyed our short English conversation in the hot spring bath. |

I made negi soup and had it with shiso leaves for breakfast. My cat and I went to Oku-Nikko. Up until now, whenever I went to Oku-Nikko, I would buy groceries at a convenience store before the Iroha-zaka slope, but this time I decided to buy them at the supermarket "Kamashin Musee Toyosatodai" near the Utsunomiya Museum of Art. It's much cheaper than convenience stores! We arrived at the Yunoko public parking lot at 3:00 PM. I had futomaki sushi that I bought at Kamashin for lunch. I took a walk along the lakeside and took a few pictures. It looks like some elementary school kids are going to have a campfire this evening. There are signs all over the parking lot saying, "Due to management reasons, car camping is strictly prohibited." After 5:00 PM, almost all the parked cars were gone, so I moved to a spot where there were no signs and went to sleep. |

I had breakfast at 8:00 AM. I jogged 4 km in Yasaka Park. Then I walked 5 km to search for my key, because I realized I had lost it when I got back home. Luckily, my key had been turned in to the park management office, so it was returned to me. Adding a splash of lemon juice to barley tea makes it taste great. My cat seemed to be feeling the heat too. Dinner was anko mochi and non-alcoholic beer. |

I had bibimbap (pre-made frozen), green onion soup, boiled potatoes, and granola yogurt for breakfast. I went to my favorite soba restaurant, Kimura, to have tenseiro for lunch. Tenseiro is a dish that combines tempura and seiro soba. Kimura's tempura is so delicious. It's the best tempura I've ever had at a soba restaurant. Katana-ya's tempura is also reasonably priced and tasty, but it doesn't compare to Kimura's. That's why I often order tenseiro at Kimura, and mori (plain soba) or kurumi (walnut sauce soba) at Katana-ya. Then I visited Doho Park for a walk. I took some photos to test the Petri ZOOM 1:4.8 f=85-210mm lens. After that, I went to Costco Tsukuba. I bought a case of 24 cans of Budweiser. It was 720 yen cheaper than buying it at Torisen. Gasoline there is about 20 yen per liter cheaper than at other stations, so filling up my FJ is more than 1,000 yen cheaper each time. The Costco annual membership fee is easily offset by filling up my FJ just four times. |

For breakfast, I had simmered pork offal with green onions, sliced cucumber with mayonnaise, grilled eggplant drizzled with soy sauce, a fried egg, boiled green beans with lemon juice, granola yogurt, anda café au lait. I jogged 4 kilometers in Yasaka Park, then walked 2 km. For lunch, I had toasted whole wheat bread topped with cream cheese and red bean paste, grilled atsuage, smashed cucumber with sesame dressing, and a café au lait. For dinner, I had microwaved leeks and sausages, boiled potatoes, and grilled eggplant. I finished fine-tuning the Petri ZOOM 1:4.8 f=85-210mm lens and the mount adapter. |

For breakfast, I had stir-fried green beans topped with bonito flakes, braised pork ribs over rice, natto, and granola yuoglt. When I tested my homemade mount adapter for Petri lenses in Ueda, I discovered a defect in the base Chinese-made component, so I repaired it. My Petri ZOOM 1:4.8 f=85-210mm (No. 801096), which I won on Yahoo! Auctions for 500 yen back in October 2021, wouldn't focus to infinity. Therefore, I adjusted it by filing down some of its parts. I found some old whole wheat flour in the refrigerator, so I tried baking a loaf in my automatic bread maker. It didn't rise very well, but it still didn't taste bad. My brother gave me a large quantity of green onions, so I made a pork offal and green onion stew. I had that with some tofu for dinner. |

I woke up early. I did some preparation for my English conversation lesson. After all, it's not enough to just read—I have to be able to speak. I harvested some cherry tomatoes from my vegetable garden. I attended my Saturday English class at 10:30 AM. I shared an anecdote about a bus I took in Obihiro, Hokkaido. For dinner, I had sweet corn rice balls and green onion soup. |

The weather was nice. My wife made breakfast. The building next to my son's house is being demolished. It was the first time I had ever seen a building demolition up close. While my wife went to her yoga class, I took a walk around Yanagimachi and Ueda Castle Ruins Park to take some pictures. Afterward, my wife and I went to a soba restaurant ”Sanada” in Sanada area for lunch. Following lunch, I headed back to Iwai with my cat. I arrived in Iwai around 6:30 PM. The three cucumbers in my vegetable garden had grown quite large. For dinner, I had a Jimanyaki (sweet bean pancake) that I bought in Ueda, along with grilled green onions, tofu, and granola yogurt.. |

The weather was nice, and both Mount Taro and Mount Eboshi were clearly visible. My wife and I went to the mossy forests of the northern Yatsugatake Mountains again today. We parked our car at the Mugikusa Pass parking lot, just a few kilometers away from where we parked the other day. We then headed toward our destination, Amaike, along the hiking trail through the mossy forest. Amaike appears to be a volcanic crater pond formed by accumulated rain and snow, which fills up or dries out depending on the season and rainfall. It seems that few people visit this place; in fact, we didn't see a single person during our entire round trip. The pond was completely full, allowing us to spend a truly peaceful time surrounded by the primeval conifer forest. |

Today, my wife and I went to the Yunomaru Plateau, where Jizo Pass is located. We had planned to visit Ikenotaira Marsh and climb Mount Miharashi. However, the soba restaurant where we wanted to have lunch was closed. We drove around the pass looking for another place to eat but couldn't find one. In the end, we headed down to the foot of the mountain and had lunch at a restaurant attached to a famous cheese factory, after waiting for about 45 minutes. They had a five-cheese platter on the menu, so we ordered that along with a salad with blue cheese dressing and some bread. I thought it would have been the perfect lunch with a glass of wine, but since I was driving, I had to skip it. It turned out to be a great opportunity, as we got to try a paid tasting of five different types of their cheese. Since we ran out of time to climb the mountain, we headed straight back to Ueda.It was still hot at 3 PM, so I couldn't leave my cat in the car in the parking lot. Instead, she and I went to Jissouinn Temple in the Sanada district and parked in the shade. It's one of my favorite temples, so I spent some time there taking pictures. We returned to Ueda around 5 PM. |

My wife made breakfast. The weather was nice, and both Mount Taro and Mount Eboshi were clearly visible. Around 10:00 AM, my wife and I left Ueda for Shirakoma-ike, located in the mossy forests of the northern Yatsugatake Mountains. We took the Nagano Expressway and the Chubu Odan Expressway from Ueda to the Yachiho Interchange, and bought lunch at the Yachiho Kogen Michi-no-Eki(roadside station). We parked our car in the paid parking lot for Shirakoma-ike along National Route 299 (Märchen Road), which serves as the trailhead. We reached the lake in about 30 minutes on foot. At 12:30 PM, we ate our lunch by the lakeshore. Eating lunch in a forest over 2,000 meters above sea level, just two and a half hours away from Ueda—it felt absolutely wonderful. Afterward, we climbed the mountain trail through the mossy forest up to Takamiishi. The summit is covered with massive piles of giant boulders, making it the most challenging terrain I've ever climbed. Although the distant view was obscured by clouds, the full panorama of Shirakoma-ike nestled in the forest below was definitely even better than the view from the lakeshore. I'm so glad I made it to the top. For dinner, my wife made a chicken and vegetable dish. |

My cat and I left around 9:00 AM for Ueda. We stopped for a break at the Kanra Parking Area around 10:30 AM and arrived in Ueda at 12:30 PM. My wife and I went to Kadokko for lunch, a cafe and pizzeria located in a renovated old folk house in Ueda with a wood-fired stone oven. Sweet Corn Soup: It was cold, rich, sweet, and delicious. Half & Half Pizza: Prosciutto and Margherita. Seasonal Fruit Pizza: Freshly baked, warm pizza crust topped with chilled custard cream and assorted fresh fruits. Weekday Mini Dessert: Blancmange with apricot jam and granola. For dinner, my wife made grilled pork. |

For breakfast, I had chopped basil with tomatoes, chopped shiso leaves with tofu, granola yogurt, and a café au lait. The cucumbers in my home garden have started to bear fruit. The eggplants and bell peppers are flowering. The green beans have small pods, but pill bugs are eating them. The blueberry bushes are bearing fruit, and every morning I harvest about ten ripe ones that are ready to eat. The other day, I bought two packs of "Myturf Shibanido Green Granules 1.4kg" (maximum coverage 70m², lasts 5 months), a selective herbicide for lawns, from Amazon. At 1,836 yen per pack, it was quite expensive compared to other herbicides I use. However, since it also contains lawn fertilizer, it might actually be reasonably priced. This was my first time using it. It kills only weeds without affecting Japanese lawn grass. Containing two active ingredients, it works by inhibiting photosynthesis and cell wall synthesis. Because it's in granular form, it needs to be spread evenly and then watered. The forecast calls for rain tomorrow.Particular caution must be exercised regarding health hazards from inhaling fine dust from granular pesticides. In addition to wearing a mask and goggles, I took a shower immediately after finishing the work. I made a hot sandwich with two kinds of cheese and ham for dinner. |

For breakfast, I had blueberry granola yogurt, tofu topped with chopped shiso leaves, clam rice topped with finely chopped celery, parsley, and basil, and a café au lait. The blueberries, shiso, celery, parsley, and basil were all harvested from my garden. I also tried making a tofu sauce using white wine and miso. I was entering the accounting data for the first half of the year, but Miya-O kept getting in the way, so I couldn't make much progress. I ended up just spending time with her instead. For dinner, I made horse mackerel hamburgers simmered negi(green onions), and a baked potato. I also made toast topped with two kinds of cheese. |

I love Marusei Butter Sandwiches made by Rokkatei, which is headquartered in Obihiro. Of course, I bought some when I went there last month. Since the expiration date was approaching, I froze them. Freezing them doesn't affect the flavor at all. If you eat them straight from the freezer, the butter cream is delicious, almost like ice cream. This morning, I made two servings of sauce yakisoba. For breakfast, I had one serving topped with a fried egg, along with a tomato salad and granola yogurt. I sold a broken ASAHI PENTAX camera body—with a faulty shutter and mirror—on Yahoo! Auctions for 550 yen. I walked to the Iwai Post Office to ship it. Afterward, I walked through Yasaka Park, covering a total of about 6 kilometers. I received a lot of tomatoes from my younger brother. For dinner, I made a tomato stew with pork offal, and I also finished the rest of the sauce yakisoba. |

I had natto, tamago kake gohan (rice topped with a raw egg), vegetable and sausage soup, granola yogurt, and a café au lait for breakfast. For lunch, I had a cream cheese and anko sandwich, vegetable soup, cucumber and tomato salad, and a café au lait. I started my workout at Yasaka Park at 4 PM, walked 1 kilometer, jogged 4 kilometers, and then walked some more. The total distance came to about 8 kilometers. For dinner, I made instant ramen topped with aburaage and green onions. I also had grilled eggplant, carrots, and pumpkin, along with a cucumber salad, and a tomato and basil salad. |

I disturbed her nap in return. The repaving work on the road in front of my house was completed. The white lines have been freshly painted, and the road looks beautiful. |
